MAXIMOV PUBLICATIONS
The idea to create a series of reference books appeared when Ian and Kevin Maxwell, the sons of the late British media magnate Robert Maxwell, and Andrei Maximov, a Russian orientalist, met in Oxford in late 1994.
At that moment, both parties were ready to start a new business. The idea to publish reference books with contact information of prominent Russian officials seemed promising. Such reference books exist in many countries and are always in demand. Interestingly enough, in Russia a first publication of this kind – a court-guide – was released as far as 1733 (in Great Britain in 1848). In various forms such reference books had been, under the brand A.S. Suvorin Publications, published in Russia till 1917.
Starting this project in the mid-1990s, its founders believed that their reference books would mainly interest foreigners doing business in Russia. So, the new series was styled after the well-known Vacher's Parliamentary Companion, while the company itself was named Maximov’s Companion. From the very beginning, Maximov’s reference books were published both in Russian and English, and marketed as expensive gift books. Until 1998, they had been printed in Oxford.
When released, the product proved right in format and popular, though not so much among foreigners, as the Russians themselves. In 1998, business underwent the process of rebranding with its name changed for Maximov Publication and the production transferred to Russian St Petersburg. Since then, all Maximov’s information products became Russian-made, though Ian and Kevin Maxwell still help as consultants.
From the very beginning, Maximov Publications focused not so much on the scope of its contact information, as on its accuracy and reliability. Maximov’s reference books and data bases contain details not only of heads of the companies and organizations, but of all top managers and key managers based on 5 levels of responsibility and up to 30 professional specializations. Maximovguarantees the reliability of its information up to 96%. As a result, Maximov Publications occupies a unique niche in the Russian contact information market having virtually no competitors in producing information products of high accuracy and reliability.
